Park Guell, Barcelona

Park Guell is high on everybody's list when they go to Barcelona. It's a park situated at the top of the hill overlooking Barcelona, and was originally designed as a residential complex by the famous architect Antoni Gaudi. The funding fell through, so Gaudi lived part of his life in one of the completed homes, and the area was later turned into a park.

As it is a Gaudi design it's quite surrealistic, but very interesting. Like this Lizard on the steps.( pictured above). Note that everybody gets photographed next to the Lizard, and it was quite a feat to get a picture without someone standing next to it..

We caught the train to Lesseps, and caught a taxi to the entrance to the park. However it's about a 1 km walk uphill from the train station if you are feeling fit. Entry is free to the park.

Gaudi's Doric columns and tiled mosiacs are spectacular. The view from the top of the hill is too.

Take some time to see Gaudi's home. Gaudi is the designer of the unfinished cathedral, The Sagrada Familia.

It's an easy walk downhill to the train station, Lesseps. It's a nice way to spend a sunny afternoon in Barcelona.

The public transport system is pretty good in Barcelona. The Metro (underground railway system) trains run regularly, and their are stations close to everywhere you want to go. It's colour coded, like the London Underground. As I said mentioned earlier, The Barcelona Card, comes with a Metro card to use for the duration of the ticket that you purchased. If you didn't purchase The Barcelona Card then it's fairly easy to use the ticket machines. It's 2 Euros to go anywhere in Central Barcelona.

Barcelona is in the province of Catalonia, so you mainly get Catalan food. Tonight I went to a fairly typical Catalan restaurnat in Poble Sec. A slightly different thing you might experience in Spain is that you don't get butter with your bread; you rub tomato, olive oil, and put salt on it. Tonight I tried snails for the first time, which is normally associated with French cuisine. Actually I ended up eating 64 snails! I also tried Rabbit for the first time, which tasted a little like chicken. I would reccomend the Creme Catalan for dessert, which is like Creme Brule.
