Australia Road Trip. Day 2: Melbourne

It was a beautiful sunny day in Melbourne today. We caught the tram from outside our hotel to Flinders Street Railway Station (right).

Travel Tip: The City Circle Tram Route is absolutely free.

From there we walked across the bridge, observing the brown Yarra River, which Melbourne is built on, to South Bank. Sydney of course is built on the most beautiful harbour in the world, but hey, whose comparing?

It’s such a nice day that we decided to go on a river cruise on the mighty Yarra, and at Southbank there is a departure point for Melbourne River Cruises. We think that to really get to see a city built on the river you have to take a river cruise. Louise and I have done so in London, Paris, Prague, Memphis, Washington, New York, and now Melbourne.

Travel Tip: Peruse those Melbourne pamphlets and find the buy one ticket, get one free coupon.

Louise and I take a position at the back of the boat for a relaxing one hour cruise down the river past Crown Casino, Melbourne Convention Centre to Melbourne Docklands.

The boat dropped us on the north side of the river near Flinders Street Station, and we caught a tram to St Kilda. St Kilda appears to be very trendy, similar to Sydney’s Newtown I guess. The television show, “Secret life of Us” was filmed here.

This is St Kilda Beach (below)

Taking the tram back to Flinders Station, we walked up Swanston Street to Melbourne’s shopping district.

Tonight, being Louise's birthday we decided to do something special; pizza and wedges room service (we can't leave, because she simply has to know who gets voted off "So you think you can dance"). I'm so glad I have a fiance with simple tastes.

Louise wants to thank everyone who wished her a happy birthday today (her phone was constantly beeping with messages, and the inbox is clogged).

Tomorrow we are exploring more of Melbourne.
